The Bridge

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted (e.g., buttons at left removed to improve readability, and all event information together following other items) sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

There will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted here—if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email and can be received wherever you may be, unlike the paper version. Note that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically delivered one to two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

Display of Email Addresses

Per the website policy defined in the HRSC Bylaws, the "mailto:" feature of email address links, that generates a draft email when clicked, is not used with personal email addresses—only with general addresses such as Hotline@hrcaz.org or Bridge_Editor@hrcaz.org. This restriction only applies to the website, and thus this online Bridge—it does not apply to the PDF eBridge, since that is not publicly available and cannot be crawled by email address harvesters.

2020 continues to march on with more COVID-19. Please continue to stay safe and wear a mask. Who knows when this will end? It is anybody’s guess. But hooray, elections have finally happened! We hope you got a chance to vote and your candidate has won. No more political ads to disrupt our TV viewing.

The Board will continue to meet monthly and we will continue with the monthly Bridge. We want you to know the Scholarship program will continue on schedule and will open to applicants on December 1st. The rules have been modified slightly, so make sure your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren who are available for the scholarship program know about the changes.

Remember, due to the fact that most of the events were cancelled in 2020, the Board has voted to extend membership expiration dates by one year for new members this year, as well as continuing members. In all cases, if they join between now and April 30, 2021, their first $5.00 will take them through April 30, 2022. If you pay for multiple years in advance, they will also be extended by one year. For further clarification, your new expiration date will be provided when you receive your first Bridge newsletter.

Please look at the new article provided and researched by our Editor, Kay Nye. The Grand Canyon virtual tour has been provided in the November edition and is quite breathtaking. Let us know what you think and we will continue to research more.

Let us know if you have any other ideas for items you would like to see in the Bridge. When it is safe, we will continue with group events so we can see everyone.

MISSION STATEMENT

Honeywell Retiree Social Club (HRSC) is a social organization in Arizona for Honeywell International, Inc. retirees. This organization will be open without regard to prior class of employment, race, creed, sex or geographical residence.

HRSC will provide activities, programs (such as Fix-It Guys and Scholarship Program) and projects of interest to retirees and spouses. It will facilitate effective communications between members, other Honeywell retiree clubs and Honeywell International, Inc. It will provide opportunities to renew acquaintances and promote fellowship among retirees, and will assist retirees in maintaining and enhancing the image of Honeywell International, Inc., in the eyes of the public.

PAPER OR ELECTRONIC?

Once again we would like to take this opportunity to encourage our members to switch from a paper Bridge to the electronic version of the Bridge. And if you are currently receiving both, there are many advantages to switching to an electronic copy only. Our goal is to keep you informed as much as possible during these trying times and to let you know that we are still here for you. The electronic Bridge will definitely make that happen! Often there is a lag in delivery of the paper Bridge that could cause members to miss current information and/or articles. In order to receive the latest information, we highly recommend that you start receiving an electronic copy of the Bridge each month. They will be sent directly to your E-mail address within one or two days of completion. An electronic copy of the Bridge can also be found on line at www.hrcaz.org. The on line Bridge, however, is not a copy of the full Bridge, only a subset. Just click on the “Online Bridge” menu button for access. We strongly encourage everyone to start using the electronic Bridge which will save time in the long run and provide the most current information within a matter of days instead of weeks.

When mailing items to the HRSC treasurer, please ensure that you address the envelope using the full name of the club, i.e. Honeywell Retiree Social Club, so it goes to the proper location. Some people just put HRSC on the envelope and it ends up in HR which slows down the process.

•	A variety of information for members can be found on the HRSC website hrcaz.org. Just click the menu buttons at the left of most pages. One of these is a link to the “Event Schedule” so you can review upcoming events that you may be interested in attending.
•	In addition to upcoming events, accessing the above website will also provide additional Honeywell-related information. Click on the “Useful Links” button, then select “Jump to Honeywell Dashboard” at the top of the page.

April 1st is the deadline for application submission this academic year so be sure you get our information to your student in a timely manner. We are updating our on-line application submission process so please visit the Scholarship web page at hrcaz.org starting December 1 to be sure you have the newest information. Here are the criteria:

The B

•	You must be 50+ years of age and a paid-up member of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club or Honeywell-Garrett Retiree Club.
•	Do you have a college student in your family who is your descendant (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and/or great-great grandchildren)?
•	Are they currently enrolled at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University or the University of Arizona as either an undergraduate or graduate student?
•	Are they maintaining a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better?

If you can answer yes to all of the above, then your college student is eligible for a scholarship from the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation. This means FREE MONEY $$$ for your student to aid them with their college expenses, help them achieve their goals in life and become productive members of the community and society. These funds are available to our students through the generous contributions of our retiree club members and Honeywell. The scholarships usually range in value from $500-$1,500 per academic year, depending on total donations.

WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE?

The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advisor).
We live in a global economy. The ability of the United States to maintain its leadership role in the world, and the resulting benefits which accrue to us as citizens, demand an educated workforce as well as educated citizens and voters.

Supporting education by donating to scholarships is in your own interest! When you donate money to our scholarship fund, think of it as paying it forward by investing in a student’s future.

By helping someone afford a college education, you are raising their salary potential and hence the tax base. This is a good thing for everyone - better roads, better schools, better teachers, more doctors just to name a few.

Successful, well run communities attract more investment. Not to mention more folks with jobs paying into Social Security and Medicare which is something all retirees are interested in preserving.

Giving makes you feel good, strengthens personal values and shows your children and grandchildren what you care about.

Best of all, giving to the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation means every cent is used for scholarships.

Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes.

Report from Mary Barkl:

The Octoberfest was enjoyed by all. Lots of good food and many take-home boxes for a late dinner I suppose. Leigh Dechaine provided our entertainment and was fabulous! He added some extra entertainment by teaching us some new songs which got the crowd going. The area for lunch was set up so unique, like a very long family table, so there was no need for an Ice Breaker. Friends were made quickly. We had five door prize winners and two $27 winners who played 50/50. Everyone went away satisfied. The Edelweiss had a large pig outside behind the restaurant. No he was not next week’s dinner, just a pet.

Commemorative Air Force Museum

The visit to the Commemorative Air Force Museum, at Mesa’s Falcon Field, on November 16, 2019, provided an opportunity to take a walk back through military aviation history.

Our own Tom Leard, a docent at the museum, lead the tour of about 10 AAC members. The museum focuses on military aviation exhibits from WWI to the present. So, the tour started with the WWI exhibits where the use of air assets, as a military weapon, really got its start. The several aircraft, and many mostly peopled focused individual exhibits, progressed from there, especially through the WWII, Korea, and Vietnam (S.E.A) conflicts.

Communications, photo recommence, and brain buckets were some of the technical exhibits. Video based displays told the stories of, among others, the Doolittle Raid, Tuskegee Airman, and the Flying Tigers.

The group was able to go inside the “Sentimental Journey,” a WW II, B-17G bomber.

Arrowhead Country Club

The lunch went well—61 people attended. Six $25 gift cards were given out. The food was good and the outside view was very pleasant.

During our survey, many of you stated that you did not attend the Christmas dinner event because you preferred not to drive at night. As a result, the annual Christmas dinner was replaced with the new Christmas luncheon. This encouraged more people to attend and take part in the good food, good company, and to enjoy the fun. We appreciate your input!

On December 14th we joined Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun (RTVOS) to make much needed renovations to the Jerry Colangelo Branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. Here are some pictures of a few of the projects that our members worked on, but there were many other projects as well. We all had fun working with the current Honeywell employees. The folks at the Boys and Girls Clubs were very appreciative.

Arizona Falls

Report:

A cool sunny day was ideal for six fellow hikers and bikers to visit Arizona Falls. A brief tour was completed with lots of questions on just what some of the mechanics partially hidden behind the falling water did.

A bike ride down to Scottsdale and then back to the Biltmore and Wrigley Mansion was completed with only one flat tire at the end (good timing). A picnic was held in fron of th falls after the ride.

Arizona Falls, formed by a natural 20-foot drop along the Arizona Canal between what is now 56th and 58th street, reopened in June 2003 as a restored hydroelectric plant and neighborhood gathering place where visitors can learn, interact and reflect.

The new Arizona Falls combines art, history and technology to generate clean electricity from the canal's waterfall.

Features

The site showcases the Phoenix Art Commission’s "Water Works at Arizona Falls" project, designed by renowned Boston artists Lajos Heder and Mags Harries. The main entrance is on the south side; a footbridge connects the north bank to the viewing platform.

Visitors, surrounded by water on three walls in the water room, may sit on large boulders as they enjoy the cool and soothing sounds of flowing water.

Through sheets of flowing water, the antique gears used in the original hydroelectric plant can be seen. Two aqueducts frame the room to create the feeling of being inside the historic waterfall. A shade structure covers stone block seats near a pool of water, allowing visitors to enjoy the experience year-round.

Lake Pleasant Cruise Tour

Report:

On Wednesday, February 26th our group of 47 boarded the brand-new cruise boat "Phoenix" at Lake Pleasant Harbor for a 90-minute narrated tour of Lake Pleasant. Although the weather started out cool with a bit of wind, it warmed up, the breeze stopped and it turned into a great day for cruising.

Captain Matt was very informative. We saw the dam up close, the Scorpion Bay dock from the water and cruised 5 miles up north on the lake. There we saw several burros grazing at Goose Bay and a deer on Barker Island.

The drink/snack service on board was very good, with a full-service bar. They even had fresh popcorn. There were large viewing windows and an open-air shaded upper deck, not to mention two spacious restrooms. After the cruise, a number of people in our group had a late lunch at Dillons.

A good time was had by all!! Below are several pictures taken on cruise day.

Sanderson Village and Museum

Report:

On Wednesday 28th of February 23 members of the retirees club toured the car museum. The tour lasted 60-75 minutes. Interestingly there were more women than men on the tour as it includes not only cars but memorabilia like a 50s diner, old mercantile store, neon signs etc. A juke box played in the background and afterwards we visited the 50s Starliner diner. For those who missed it we will have another trip next year and I have included a lot of photos on our website aeroactivitiesclub.com.

This was a tour of a private, invitation only, museum. The Sanderson Village and Museum contains dozens of cars and nostalgic items, such as a beautifully recreated old mercantile store, a kitchen from the ‘40s and a ‘50s diner with oodles of chrome and period furnishings and accessories such as Coca Cola items from the ‘30s through the ‘50s. The 20,000 square-foot warehouse has one of the best Ford collections anywhere and has something for everyone to enjoy.

Event is on with COVID Precautions

“We will be taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of our guests and staff. Everyone is required to wear a mask, will practice social distancing, with tour sizes broken into smaller groupings. Most of the tour is outside riding on golf carts.”

This is a private tour for Aero, Honeywell, and Garrett clubs. Tours are approximately 2 hours and include the historic Castle's main floor and basement, extensive grounds, and cactus gardens surrounding the Castle. Most of the tour is outside riding a tram so dress warm. The tour starts at 10.00 am and the grounds are cool. The tour is wheelchair-accessible but no electric scooters are allowed. There are seats inside the building to rest on so it is not a strenuous tour.

Guests are greeted by Tovrea Carraro Society volunteers at the Visitor Center and taken through the Carraro Cactus Gardens on a tram with a docent. The tour winds through the beautiful 44 acres, viewing the outer buildings, before arriving at Tovrea Castle.

The Society has increased the price to $20 and the club is adding $2 per ticket for expenses for a total of $22 each.

This will be our last tour for 12 months so please do not delay in booking the last tickets. We have had over 400 members visit on 16 different dates and the event is still popular.

Southwest Airlines Maintenance Hangar Tour

Several members have requested this tour again so here goes. This is a unique opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines Maintenance Facility at Sky Harbor Airport. You may be able to walk through an aircraft and sit in the cockpit then tour the maintenance and operation areas in a two hour guided tour. You will find out why the first aircraft were painted those colors, how the fit an aircraft that is too big into the hanger and maybe debate the correct part numbers of the APS we see in the stores. Last year we sat in an aircraft only 5 flight hours old and not yet entered service. Yes it had the new aircraft smell. This free tour is planned for Wednesday, April 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. but names of all attendees are required in advance for security purposes. This will be our fourth tour and spaces fill quickly. I have to limit the group to 40 for practical reasons.

More About The Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting

The Hall of Flame Museum, located in Phoenix, Arizona, is home to the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes and has almost an acre of fire history exhibits, over 90 fully restored pieces of fire apparatus on display (dating from 1725 to 1969), a children’s area, and museum gift shop. While most of their collection focuses on the American firefighting experience, they also have fire apparatus and related artifacts from England, France, Austria, Germany, and Japan. Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) Tour

Event: Experience Japan, Saturday, October 3rd.

Experience the music of the "Land of the Rising Sun," one of MIM's signature events, with a guided tour. From the excitement of Taiko drums to the pure tones of the shakuhachi flute, Japanese music has something for everyone.

Time: 10:00 AM arrival at a designated location near MIM entrance.

Format: Attendees will participate in the one-hour guided tour group (with headsets). Afterwards, you can purchase lunch in the MIM café and visit with fellow club members, and then tour the full museum at your leisure. Visit mim.org to see all this enriching venue has to offer.

Cost: $20 per person: $15 for ages 13 to 19; $10 for ages 4-12.

Other Info: Parking is free. MIM has complimentary wheelchairs on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have your own mobility scooter, you can use it. They also have assistive listening systems available on request.

Panama Canal Cruise

Update from Barbara Rippstein

Princess have now canceled this cruise. All those affected have already been informed.

(Notes written prior to cancellation.)

Traveling for pleasure has become something that we can only remember or look forward to enjoying again. We have been advised to stay home. Non-essential travel is discouraged, restaurants are only serving take out.

Most cruise lines were faced with port closures, decreased flights and increased travel restrictions that change on a country-by-country basis. Adding to voluntary suspensions, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a no-sail order on April 9th for all cruise ships over 250 passengers and crew that operate in U.S. waters. The order is expected to remain in place until COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency. Should 100 days from the official date of issue expire (bringing us to late July), and the COVID-19 pandemic still be an emergency, the CDC would have the option to extend the order.

I have been keeping tabs on when each line expects to resume sailings, keeping in mind that for relevant cruise lines sailing in U.S. waters, the CDC order supersedes individual cruise line dates for a return to service.

Princess is expecting to resume sailing all ships in July in the U.S. and Europe. Which means that on November 10th our 15 night cruise through the Panama Canal will be sailing from San Pedro, CA and returning via Fort Lauderdale, FL. If you have never seen the canal, this will be an extraordinary treat. We are going through the new locks. They’re bigger and better.

In addition, we all need something to look forward to and I have found the perfect trip. Starting August 27, 2021, a 9-night sun-drenched escape aboard Celebrity EquinoxSM will provide an experience with the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Visit world-class restaurants, designer boutiques, and elegant beaches in the Cayman Islands. Board a catamaran for a peaceful day of sailing and snorkeling at Aruba’s Palm Beach. As Mary mentioned in the President’s Perspective, the HRSC Board is exploring new avenues for things to do to replace the events that have been cancelled for 2020. One of the options we discussed and researched were virtual tours. We discovered that there were many to choose from on the internet that we thought would be both interesting and enjoyable for our members.

The majority of the events we researched are available on YouTube but some were also available on other venues such as Facebook and Instagram. Although there are many options to choose from, we reviewed them on line and chose the ones on YouTube that we thought would be the most interesting.

This month we will be featuring the Grand Canyon virtual tour. Please take the opportunity to view the Grand Canyon tour and let us know what you think and if it is something that you want us to pursue further. In 2019, nearly 6 million people visited the Grand Canyon National Park. Last year was also the 100th anniversary of the Grand Canyon's national park designation. At 227 miles long and an average of over 10 miles wide, there are endless ways to explore this national monument. Thanks to the National Park Service, a digital visit is now among those options.
