Newsletter of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

There will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted here—if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email and can be received wherever you may be, unlike the paper version. Note that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

President's Perspective

Mary Barkl

We have some exciting news and would like to introduce our new Editor. Her name is Kay Nye and she is working this month with Joyce to produce the December Bridge.  Kay comes from Honeywell’s Space Division where she had worked for 26 years, recently retired.   She was a Project Manager at the Glendale location.  She also conducted training for ten years to all Space Division sites on the management of government contracts. She was responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating all of the training manuals.

We would also like to thank Joyce Colella for helping us through most of the year with the Bridge while we looked for an Editor.  We will still work closely with SRC and Joyce to ensure that their events are available and open to HRSC members.

We would like to remind you that we have a new Fix-it-guy Coordinator. His name is Warren Koepsel at 480-510-9304.  We are still looking for you if you are handy and would love to join the Fix-it-guy group, give Warren a call.

We are still in need of more board members.  Openings are Secretary and an additional director or two.  We need you to keep the club going.  The board meets about 8 to 9 times during the year to plan events.  There are no board meetings or Bridge publications in May, June, or July.  Please call Mary Barkl at 480-580-5585 if you are interested or leave an email message at hotline@hrcaz.org

See who your board members are and their function on the last page of the Bridge. We want to truly thank our membership for participating with us. We would like to wish you a Happy Holiday and a wonderful New Year.

Regards, Mary

Scholarships for College

Honeywell Retiree Clubs

Scholarship Foundation

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM HAS DISTRIBUTED AWARDS FOR THIS YEAR

Once again the popularity of the scholarship program has increased this year.  A total of 12 applicants have received awards ranging from $1,100 to $1,200.  Thank you to the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs as well as Honeywell International for their generous donations.  The majority of the yearly total available funds come from contributions by individual members of the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs.  All of you who gave are making a difference in the lives of these deserving recipients.

Cost of a college education has been increasing yearly and our number of valid applicants has increased from 1 at program start to 12 for this year.  So far, we have been able to award each of the qualified applicants with at least $1,000.  Continued awards of this modest amount for each applicant will likely be impossible unless we can increase contributions.  Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes.  The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3), so donations should be tax deductible (check with your tax advisor).  Please remember, students receiving these benefits are all family members of retired Honeywell and Garrett employees.  By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family members of people you worked with for years.

This Month's Featured Scholarship Recipients

Camille Unsworth
- Attending ASU

Granddaughter of Brian Unsworth - Garrett Retiree Club

Camille_UnsworthHi I’m Camille Unsworth and am 18 years old. I’m a sophomore at ASU’s Polytechnic campus and studying Applied Biological Sciences with a minor in Applied Mathematics. I chose this major because I have always been very interested in math and sciences. I have always particularly enjoyed Biology courses and excelled in math courses.

My favorite math courses usually involve algebra because I find the problems can actually be like a puzzle and fun to solve. This past semester I took Differential Equations and received an A+ in the class.

When I was 16 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which has had its challenges, but one of the good things is I now know I want to go into a field that improves the equipment for chronic medical conditions. I am still relatively new to managing my diabetes so I chose ASU which allows me to still live at home and be supported by my family.

I have made the Dean’s List both fall and spring semesters of my freshman year. Upon high school graduation I was awarded a full tuition scholarship from ASU.  To cover the additional costs of school I am working at Salt River Tubing. This is my second season out there and it has been a great way to earn money to help cover these additional costs while meeting lots of interesting people.

Lots of members of my family have worked at Honeywell and it has been a part of my life ever since I was a little kid. In particular I remember how much fun I had at the Christmas on Ice shows and winning a hula hoop contest at an Open House day. Thank you for this scholarship in support of my education.

Ashley Wiley - Attending NAU

Granddaughter of Dolf Strom – Garrett Retiree Club

Maureen_van_DobbenHi, I’m Maureen van Dobben. I am a 20-year-old senior at Arizona State University (ASU). I’m studying Digital Culture, with a concentration in media processing, and also am a part of Barrett, the Honors College at ASU.

I’m passionate about creating unique projects through the combination of computer science and design theory. I always strive to learn and grow and achieved a GPA of 3.7. Throughout my journey at ASU, I’ve explored exciting opportunities in my classes, enjoyed internships in new fields and started clubs to bring students together.

I’m majoring in Digital Culture, with a concentration in media processing. To be honest, when I say that my major is Digital Culture, most people just seem confused. The Digital Culture program here at ASU is very malleable, so everyone’s journey is a little different but the main focus is upon interdisciplinary collaboration and creating for the 21st century. Students range from classically-trained musicians to engineers and architecture students to computer scientists. In my case, I’m studying computer science and design theory; I plan to become a website developer once I graduate.

During the summer, I had an internship with a marketing company in Scottsdale, working on website design and development. Additionally, I’m a student manager at the Fabrication Lab on campus, where I help students with woodworking, 3D printing and laser cutting projects. As a manager, I organize student workers staffing the lab, oversee projects, and help organize projects with faculty. I love my student worker job, I work with a wonderful group of people and I really get to help students bring their ideas to life by helping them with design or using the tools.

I’m currently in the process of founding a club called CreatorSpace, with the goal of hosting free D.I.Y. workshops for students. A lot of students aren’t aware of all the resources ASU offers for free, through Creator Space, we hope to take advantage of these resources and introduce students to hands-on skills through simple projects, like basic woodworking or working with electronics. Previously, I also co-founded the Barrett Downtown Philosophy club with my sophomore year.

I would like to thank the Honeywell Retirees club for this scholarship. I am using it to pay for the tuition and books for my senior year. I’m very proud of my work ethic and success in college; I hope this essay reflects that. Thank you.

RTVOS Community Service Project - Reprise!

Project Completion, Jan 8, 2018

RTVOS PainterSix HRSC members turned out on January 8 to work a second day on completion of this project at Desert Horizon Elementary School in Maryvale, a Title I school serving low-income students. This was a joint project with Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS). We made good progress, and a couple of RTVOS people were able to finish off the remaining work later, so the project is now complete—thanks to all the HRSC members who worked on either of the days to make this possible.

Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station Tour
Jan 10, 2018

Palo Verde Group

This was a unique opportunity to get up close to a nuclear reactor. Palo Verde is located 45 miles west of Phoenix off the I10 and is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States, serving about four million people.

The Palo Verde Generating Station is located in the Arizona desert, and is the only large nuclear power plant in the world that is not located near a large body of water. The power plant evaporates the water from the treated sewage from several nearby cities and towns to provide the cooling of the steam that it produces.

There were 17 brave souls donned hard hats, safety glasses and earplugs to explore Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station.  We were accompanied at all times by two guides and two armed guards carrying machine guns. We entered through two sets of metal detectors and bomb sniffing devices just to get inside. Our hosts had us use palm readers to go through the doors and call ahead to security who tracked our presence.

The size of the plant is difficult to comprehend without visiting. From a vantage point 160 feet above ground we could see the cooling towers, reactor buildings and waste treatment plant. We stood next to a reactor building and walked through a hot and noisy steam turbine and power generation building. The control room is encased in very thick concrete with blast proof doors and a retina scanner to get in so we could only stand outside.

We had lunch with Bob Bement, Exec VP and Chief Nuclear Officer. He presented an overview of the facility and talked about how it operates with other forms of energy generation to meet the energy demands.

Due to PV budget constraints there will be only 2 tours this year but I hope to reschedule the remaining 2 tours in early 2019 as we have to also work around their refueling schedule.

Many thanks to Keith Hughes for arranging this tour.

Theft 1We had 17 members and guests attend our identity theft seminar on January 11th.

Cassie & Paul Prinke presented some very interesting facts regarding ways our identity can be stolen, how it affects us and how to protect ourselves.  Did you know that $15.1B was stolen from 13.1 million Americans in 2015, and that from 2014-2015 identity theft complaints increased 47%?

There were surprising facts on different types of government ID theft which comes from tax/wage related fraud, government benefits, drivers’ licenses, etc.  Also, personal information, such as S/S numbers, phone numbers, date of birth, passport information, etc., is available for thieves to buy, sell and trade through the dark web.

One good way to help prevent ID theft is to check your bank statements daily for any strange transactions and use free credit checks available from Equifax, Experian and Transunion.

When I went on the first trip I found it very interesting and it gave me bragging rights that I went there, but on reflection, most of the time we looked at the outide of buildings we could not go into and were told what they were for.

It appears the Education Center gives you much ore information and I have arranged a personal tour on April 18th, 2018 at 9:30am. Follow this link for more information on that tour.

Penske Racing Museum Tour
Thursday, March 15, 2018

Penske Photo Top

Twenty-five Sperry and Honeywell members and guests toured the Penske Racing Museum on March 15th. From the comments we received everyone enjoyed themselves, especially looking at the many Indy 500 cars Roger Penske’s team used over many years.

Our only disappointment was missing Roger himself that day (he left the Valley on the 14th).  I was told Roger likes to intermingle with his guests, giving tours himself, and answering questions.  Maybe next time.  Oh, and don’t be surprised if you happen to see some of your fellow retirees driving around the valley streets in a NEW Lamborghini, Bentley, Ferrari or other ultra-expensive automobile – just kidding!

Palo Verde Energy Education Center Tour

Apr 18, 2018
Buckeye, AZ

26 members toured the facility and listened to a presentation by our host Chuck Emmitt who had 50 years experience in the nuclear industry. We learned that Palo Verde was a base load generator and typically gas fired generators handle peak load. There was a long discussion on U235 and U238 and how it is used for fuel.

Chuck gave a detailed description of the pressurized water reactor design and its advantages over other designs. We also found out that if every piece of uranium in the United States could be used it could power the USA for a million years. One pellet of uranium the size of a pencil eraser is equivalent to 1 ton of coal or 3 barrels of oil.

Southwest Airlines Maintenance Hangar Tour

  Apr 19, 2018

Sky Harbor Airport, AZ

We had 19 club members visit Southwest two days after the engine explosion so guess what we asked about.

A forward fan blade was shed on a Southwest Airlines plane in 2016 causing the engine manufacturer CFM to investigate and finally recommend inspections of older engines within a year.

The aircraft that had a problem was due for a check in June. Looks like the problem was more serious than CFM thought. SW was inspecting 450 engines in 15 days and all 1400 in 30 days so they were being proactive.

Pictures below show the blades removed for ultrasonic inspection. Also shown is a blue jack mechanism that lifts the front landing gear of a 737-700 to drop the tail enough to get inside the hanger door that is too low for the new series jets.

MahoneyOur featured speaker was Tim Mahoney, President Honeywell Aerospace. He began with an Employee Provide – a photo and video montage done by Scott Carlton, APU engineer.

In addition to the spinoff of the turbocharger business, Tim announced the spinoff of the Homes Business (RESIDEO) consisting of the entire portfolio for Homes products plus the ADI Global Distribution business.

In 2017, Aerospace booked $14.8B in sales with 22.2% segment margin. Fastest growing area is Electronic Solutions requiring rapid expansion of capacity of precision avionics and navigation. APUs and Engines are both capacity limited by the supplier base and would have produced a 22% cumulative annual growth rate had there been no limitations. The Repair and Overhaul business is nearing $100M annual revenue. Honeywell Aerospace is growing faster than the markets it serves.

Expectations through 2022 anticipates avionics wins 2.7 times those of competitors; APUs 2.1 times; Mechanical Systems 1.6 times and Engines is expecting 100% of proposals will be winners. 16 airlines are removing competitor APS and replacing them with the 131-9. We take the replaced units, disassemble them and sell them as spare parts.

Growth opportunities include:
ā–Ŗ    Allegiant Air for power and avionics

ā–Ŗ    LION Airgroup with 617 of their a/c using
our APUs

ā–Ŗ    T900 turboshaft of Blackhawk and Apache ($50B opportunity). Tech proposal 13,500 pages.
Announcement expected Jan '19.

    ā–Ŗ    T55 (CH47) product support

    ā–Ŗ    20 kVA generator for UH-60

    ā–Ŗ    F124 for USAF T-X Trainer

Advanced Technology focus includes:
ā–Ŗ    Megawatt generator for directed energy weapons
ā–Ŗ    Advanced compressors and combustor coatings for next generation combat helos
    ā–Ŗ    Future small turbofan
ā–Ŗ    Improved performance turbine engine for MQ-9 Reaper drone.

Aerospace primary and ongoing focus is labeled the Connected Market and the Connected aircraft. Honeywell provides up to 109 different subsystems on commercial aircraft and through the knowledge of connectivity, strived to eliminate all unscheduled maintenance. The goal is to provide service connectivity of 80% of these systems by 2019.

Encompassing the connected aircraft are a/c data gateways, and both cabin and cockpit SATCOM. In addition Honeywell provides a global data center with secure infrastructure and ground networks linking all aircraft services and cabin tools.

Oktoberfest
   HRSC - Mary Barkl
  Oct 17, 2018

The Oktoberfest was a great success and was enjoyed by all, with accordion music, beer, brats, sauerkraut, ice-breaker, split-the-pot, door prizes, and, above all, the chance to renew old acquaintances and make new ones, especially with fellow retirees from different divisions.

There were raves about the brats and the beans; some went back for seconds! We had an ice breaker which it looked like all of the attendees were playing. 5 completed the ice breaker and were put in the door prize drawing which already included everyone that was in attendance.

We had two drawings for the 50/25/25 and each recipient received $27.50. There were 4 $25.00 door prizes that were won, 1 went to one of the ice breaker players and the other 3 went to other attendees.

There were many delicious desserts to savor that were brought by the board members in attendance.

This is a video clip of our accordionist, Leigh DeChaine, pictured above-right.

See photos of the event from our club photographer, Rick Carter.

Many thanks to Mary Barkl for organizing this event; everything was well thought out and ran very smoothly.
