For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

There will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted here; if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email and can be received wherever you may be, unlike the paper version. Note that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

I want to sincerely thank Joyce Colella for continuing to serve us as editor, even as she publishes the Wings and serves as interim Treasurer for her Sperry Retirees’ Club. We renew our search for an editor as the person who volunteered last month to publish The Bridge, informed me Wednesday that she would not be able to do so.

You might be interested in a couple recent good things that have happened to our members as a result of being members. The first is from member Joe Ornelas who sent the following note to us via our Hotline@hrcaz.org link on the HRSC web site. He wrote about his recent experience with our Fix-It Guys organization:

“I would [like] to express my sincere thanks to the Honeywell Fix-It Guys team that I had a need for their services recently. I had an electrical problem that I needed help and I remember reading that the Honeywell club had a team of handymen that offer to assist members with such issues. I called them and within a day, Bob Farney was scheduled to come to my house to help me resolve my electrical problem. We discussed the problem and Bob took over. After a time, he had corrected the electrical problem. I cannot thank him or the entire Fix-It Guys team enough for all the work they do in helping retire members like me solve problems. Bob saved me a bundle of $$$ and was very professional.

Again, thank the club for having such members as them!!!”

The second occurred when a member’s wife reached out to the club for assistance. 96 year old Hal Bode, a long time member, had been informed by Blue Cross that they were increasing his health insurance premium by over $600/month. The Bodes were uncomfortable with this huge increase and called for help. After a few calls and email exchanges, the folks at the HR Helpline (877) 258-3699, managed to convince Blue Cross to back out the premium increase. From Hal’s wife, Zaidee Bode:

“Hal was on the board of the Honeywell Retirees Club for many years and continued to help audit the books long after he was a board member. When Hal first retired from Honeywell, he and some of the other retirees, worked in the newly formed 'Fix-It-Guys' program and it is so rewarding to know that even though our problem was of a different nature (not a dripping faucet or a room that needed to be painted) someone was there to help us."

I’m sharing these stories with you to show that your membership has more value than just a monthly newsletter and social events. This Club values your participation and involvement.

On another subject, your Board has voted to co-sponsor a Christmas daytime luncheon this year with the Garrett Club. We are on the search for a member to help Garrett organize and run the event. If you would like to help, please let us know.

MISSION STATEMENT

Honeywell Retiree Social Club (HRSC) is a social organization in Arizona for Honeywell International, Inc. retirees. This organization will be open without regard to prior class of employment, race, creed, sex or geographical residence.

HRSC will provide activities, programs (such as Fix-It Guys and Scholarship Program) and projects of interest to retirees and spouses. It will facilitate effective communications between members, other Honeywell retiree clubs and Honeywell International, Inc. It will provide opportunities to renew acquaintances and promote fellowship among retirees, and will assist retirees in maintaining and enhancing the image of Honeywell International, Inc., in the eyes of the public.

A variety of information for members can be found on the HRSC website hrcaz.org; just click the menu buttons at the left of most pages. For example: HONEYWELL HISTORY provides the history of Honeywell from multiple sources, ARCHIVES offers back editions of the online Bridge, minutes of board meetings, Treasurer's reports and Webmaster's reports, and EVENT SCHEDULE has the latest information on upcoming HRSC events. The PHOENIX AREA ATTRACTIONS page lists a wide variety of attractions around the Valley: selected parks & preserves, selected sports venues & teams, performing arts, cultural history, museums, art galleries, and, of course "miscellaneous"! Have a look—you might find something that interests you. The USEFUL LINKS page includes senior discounts and was updated in February 2018—check it out and save yourself some money!

Scholarship Foundation

Scholarship applications for next year opened this past December 1st. The Scholarship Program is jointly sponsored by the Honeywell Retiree Social Club, and the Garrett Retiree Social Clubs of Arizona. The source of the funds for these scholarships is shared among the participating Retiree Clubs, Honeywell International (HON), and our generous members.

Our goal is to identify eligible undergraduate and graduate college students, who are descendants of a participating Retiree Club member, and award them money to help reduce their costs for a college education. Our awards generally range from $1000 to $1200 per recipient per year, based on the funds that are available. To date, we have awarded almost 50 thousand dollars, to 46 students attending Arizona State, University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS OPENED DECEMBER 1ST 2017

The Bridge

Who is eligible for the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship?

1	The student must be a legal descendant of an active or deceased member of either the Honeywell Retiree Social Club or Garrett Retirees' Social Club of AZ.
2	The student should have attained a 3.0 or better Grade Point Average (GPA).
3	The student must be entering the second semester freshman year, a sophomore, a junior, OR a senior, or in a graduate course of study. NOTE: Enrolled freshmen may apply during the second freshman semester for their sophomore year, providing they attain a 3.0 GPA or greater in their first semester. Second semester GPA will also be considered for the award.
4	Students may be enrolled in any field of study, although preference may be given to a student who is enrolled in a technical field, in the event two or more applicants qualify for the same scholarship award.
5	Candidates must re-apply annually.

Individual contributions may be made directly to the Scholarship Foundation through the 501(c)(3) charitable contributions option of your renewal form. These contributions are tax-deductible!

Giving Back, with Honeywell and RTVOS
to Improve a Low-Income School.

RTVOS-1 Our service project went very well at Desert Horizon Elementary School in Maryvale, with Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS). Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS). We had a turnout of 18 folks from HRSC (see the picture below) in and among the 90 or so total folks volunteering. We all got T- shirts and a nice box lunch, and a chance to rub shoulders with other retirees and current Honeywell employees.

But mostly we got an opportunity to help out this Title I school which serves many low-income students. Most of us were painting classroom walls, as the group in this picture. Others were doing other jobs, like painting picnic tables and making improvements to the play area.

RTVOS-2 We want to give many thanks to those who were able to join us for this worthwhile contribution to the school and the community.

RTVOS Community Service Project - Reprise!

RTVOS Painter Six HRSC members turned out on January 8 to work a second day on completion of this project at Desert Horizon Elementary School in Maryvale, a Title I school serving low-income students. This was a joint project with Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS). We made good progress, and a couple of RTVOS people were able to finish off the remaining work later, so the project is now complete—thanks to all the HRSC members who worked on either of the days to make this possible.

Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station Tour

This was a unique opportunity to get up close to a nuclear reactor. Palo Verde is located 45 miles west of Phoenix off the I10 and is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States, serving about four million people.

The Palo Verde Generating Station is located in the Arizona desert, and is the only large nuclear power plant in the world that is not located near a large body of water. The power plant evaporates the water from the treated sewage from several nearby cities and towns to provide the cooling of the steam that it produces.

There were 17 brave souls donned hard hats, safety glasses and earplugs to explore Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station. We were accompanied at all times by two guides and two armed guards carrying machine guns. We entered through two sets of metal detectors and bomb sniffing devices just to get inside. Our hosts had us use palm readers to go through the doors and call ahead to security who tracked our presence.

The size of the plant is difficult to comprehend without visiting. From a vantage point 160 feet above ground we could see the cooling towers, reactor buildings and waste treatment plant. We stood next to a reactor building and walked through a hot and noisy steam turbine and power generation building. The control room is encased in very thick concrete with blast proof doors and a retina scanner to get in so we could only stand outside.

We had lunch with Bob Bement, Exec VP and Chief Nuclear Officer. He presented an overview of the facility and talked about how it operates with other forms of energy generation to meet the energy demands.

Due to PV budget constraints there will be only 2 tours this year but I hope to reschedule the remaining 2 tours in early 2019 as we have to also work around their refueling schedule.

Theft 1 We had 17 members and guests attend our identity theft seminar on January 11^th.

Cassie & Paul Prinke presented some very interesting facts regarding ways our identity can be stolen, how it affects us and how to protect ourselves. Did you know that $15.1B was stolen from 13.1 million Americans in 2015, and that from 2014-2015 identity theft complaints increased 47%? There were surprising facts on different types of government ID theft which comes from tax/wage related fraud, government benefits, drivers’ licenses, etc. Also, personal information, such as S/S numbers, phone numbers, date of birth, passport information, etc., is available for thieves to buy, sell and trade through the dark web.

One good way to help prevent ID theft is to check your bank statements daily for any strange transactions and to use free credit checks available from Equifax, Experian and Transunion. ID

Overview I am sorry to say that the Palo Verde trips on Feb 7th and 14th have been CANCELLED due to limited resources at the station. I am trying to reschedule, but the best I can do is get something next year.

When I went on the first trip I found it very interesting and it gave me bragging rights that I went there, but on reflection, most of the time we looked at the outide of buildings we could not go into and were told what they were for.

It appears the Education Center gives you much ore information and I have arranged a personal tour on April 18th, 2018 at 9:30am. Follow this link for more information on that tour.

Tovrea Castle Tours

Tours are approximately 2 hours and include the historic Castle's main floor and basement, extensive grounds and cactus gardens surrounding the Castle.

Guests are greeted by Tovrea Carraro Society volunteers at the Visitor Center and taken through the Carraro Cactus Gardens on a tram with a docent. The tour winds through the beautiful 44 acres, viewing the outer buildings, before arriving at Tovrea Castle.

Penske Racing Museum Tour
Thursday, March 15, 2018

Twenty-five Sperry and Honeywell members and guests toured the Penske Racing Museum on March 15th. From the comments we received everyone enjoyed themselves, especially looking at the many Indy 500 cars Roger Penske’s team used over many years.

Our only disappointment was missing Roger himself that day (he left the Valley on the 14th). I was told Roger likes to intermingle with his guests, giving tours himself, and answering questions. Maybe next time. Oh, and don’t be surprised if you happen to see some of your fellow retirees driving around the valley streets in a NEW Lamborghini, Bentley, Ferrari or other ultra-expensive automobile – just kidding!

Tue, Aug 7 we say goodbye to Fairbanks for a spectacular trip to Denali National Park via scenic motor coach. We will be welcomed at the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge for a 2-night retreat. The afternoon is at leisure for all.

Wed, Aug 8 we explore Denali National Park. The Explorer group will go on the Natural History tour. The Connoisseur group will go on a Tundra Wilderness tour.

Thursday Aug 9—t

oday we will travel by motor coach to the south side of the park for two nights at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. This is where you can see Mt. Denali, the highest mountain in the United States. Take in the sensational views with a glass of wine on the expansive deck.

Fri. Aug 10 we have a full day to relax and explore. There are optional tours available for both the Explorer and Connoisseur groups.

Sat. Aug 11 after a morning enjoying the vistas, we’ll transfer to the historic town of Talkeetna aboard the exclusive Direct-to-the-Wilderness Rail for the journey to Whittier and our waiting ship.
