Newsletter
of
the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona
NOTE:
This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the
full version sent to paid-up members, with possible
updates to event information since the Bridge was
distributed.
For example, it does
not contain names of recent retirees, new members,
or members who have passed away, nor does it
contain the list of member email addresses which
is sent out from time to time.
Finally, there will typically be a
delay of a week or so before a new month's version
is posted here; if you want to get the Bridge as it
comes off the press, become
a member and request the full-color PDF
version, the eBridge, which is sent by email. Note
that the black-and-white paper Bridge is sent out by
Honeywell, who outsource the task. It is typically
delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is
delivered by email, so apart from news being a
little old, members receiving only the paper copy
may miss out on first come, first served signup for
upcoming events.

President's
Perspective
Those Amazon tours
have been wildly popular and the call to fill
vacant slots last month resulted in the openings
filling quickly! There seems to be enough
interest to continue holding this tour on an
annual basis, so we will do so until interest
wanes. After setting up four tours for over 100
people, I’m happy to hand off this fun event to
our very capable Linda Darnell. Stay tuned for
some announcements from her later this year.
 I had
the pleasure of touring the Tovrea Castle last
month with my wife, Mary, and many Honeywell and
Sperry members. We were pleased to meet Wally
and Shirley Klovstad and spent a large part of
the tour with them. There was very little
walking involved thanks to our guides and their
three electric buses. Thanks, Keith Hughes and
the Sperry Club, for setting this up. Keith has
set up two more tours for November which are
already sold out, but if there is sufficient
interest the club will buy additional tickets
for 2018. If you’ve ever been curious about this
property, I highly recommend this as an
interesting day out. Contact Keith and get on
the waiting list.
Mary and I also attended
our Day-at-the-Races at Turf Paradise and we had
our picture taken with others from the Garrett,
Honeywell, and Sperry Clubs. We were posed by
“Genesee Street”, the winner of the “Honeywell
Purse” in the 3rd race of the day. We shared a
good lunch and a fun day. If you haven’t been,
check it out next year.
Gotta give another plug for our Honeywell &
Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS)
event. Check out Doug Metzger’s notes on our
volunteer opportunity in this publication of the
Bridge. While we do not have details yet, it
will be very useful for Doug to learn who our
volunteers are early.
Two more items of note:
- Our Scholarship Foundation soon will be
selecting award winners for the next
academic year. The Foundation will have
accumulated more than $12,000 which is
over 400% more capital to work with than
when I arrived on the scene 6 years ago.
My congratulations to those working with
the Foundation for moving the group
strongly forward. As a reminder, any
contribution to this organization is tax
deductible. I encourage all of you to take
note of the Foundation’s hard work and the
need to defray expenses for our students.
I have committed to contribute to the
Foundation $100 a year and carve out
$10,000 from my estate when I pass. I urge
those of you that can, to match that
effort. For those who can’t, those
$5/$10/$25 contributions all add up and
help, too. One more important thing to
note is that 100% of the money raised by
our folks goes to our students. All
members of the Foundation Board are
volunteers who have a passion for our
kids. Won’t you help, too?
- Remember ... Your Board meetings are
always open to members who are interested
in how we do business. So I encourage you
to visit. See what we do ... and consider
becoming a leader in the Club.
Finally, I have to ask ... if tomatoes are a
fruit (look it up), shouldn’t ketchup be
considered a smoothie?
Until next month,
Ed Taschner

OCTOBER 20, 2016 - THURSDAY
Tovrea Castle
Tour November 4, 2016
The first 10 of 150
club members toured the castle. Demand has been so
great we had to arrange 9 tours and having attended
the first one I can see why. There is a fascinating
history to both the grounds and the building that I
will not reveal before others have gone. Suffice to
say it was an enjoyable visit. (Keith Hughes)
Sponsored by the Sperry
Retiree Club
Tovrea Castle
Tour, January 20, 2017
On a cold and cloudy
day on Jan 20th, 2017 we had 22
people tour the Castle in the first of four
exclusive club only tours. The group learned
about the history of the castle and the
surrounding area.
Southwest Airlines
Tour – Jan 26, 2017

Fifty club members from Air Research, Garrett, Allied,
Honeywell and Sperry clubs toured Southwest Airlines
Maintenance Facility. The two 737-700 aircraft in the
hanger were undergoing their 500 day overhaul so we
were unable to go aboard but our host, Kevin Bowman
did a fine job explaining the facility operation and
the history of the airline. We learned how the tail of
the 737-700 aircraft is too tall for the hanger so
they lift the nose wheel up to drop the tail to get
the aircraft in the hanger.
This was our third visit and if there is sufficient
interest we will arrange another visit in a few
months.
"A
DAY AT THE RACES"
Tuesday
Feb 14,
2017
A balmy day, perfect for a horse race.
Hearts were in the air and all of us brought
our special valentine. Forty-four
members and guests attended Honeywell/Sperry’s "Day at
the Races". We had participants from all three retiree
clubs, Honeywell, Garrett, and Sperry. I won all of
the races and most members at my table won as well.
The food was plentiful and good. Desserts were
fabulous and filling. Leaving I felt like I could not
wait until next year for this event.
See you next year!

Fulfillment Center (Warehouse) Tour
March 10, 2017
30 members enjoyed a very
enlightening tour of the Amazon "PHX6" Fulfillment
Center, whose area is equivalent to 28 football
fields… We started with a video overview of the
process from product delivery at the fulfillment
center to shipment, and then had opportunities to
observe the various stages of the process at close
quarters, with commentary over headsets to overcome
the quite high noise levels. Many thanks to Ed
Taschner for organizing this; he came down to make
sure all was well at the start of the tour, even
though he was not on it. (Kevin Harris)

Club member Dave Elston will give a
presentation based on his book "A Year in the
Grand Canyon: A collection of Experiences and
Colorful History from a Lifetime of Exploring
the Grand Canyon."
The book received a wonderful review
from Arizona's official State Historian, (yes, we
have one), Mr. Marshall Trimble: "Dave Elston's
passion for spending time in the beautiful Grand
Canyon wilderness has produced a series of riveting
stories that makes it a must-read for anyone who's
ever been bitten by the 'Canyon Bug.' His quest to
spend 400 days in 'Nature's Grandest Architectural
Masterpiece' over a period of years turned him from
a green novice into an experienced veteran." Dave
has speaking engagements booked statewide, and was
interviewed on Channel 3 news in January.

Tovrea Castle Tours 2017 &
2018
November 4
& 10 tours sold out
Next tour(s) tentatively January or February
2018 if sufficient interest.
Send email by mid-June at latest to express
interest.

All 200
tickets purchased by the club for nine visits have
been sold for this popular tour. If you try to go
as an individual you will find no tickets are
available for the rest of the year.
If there is sufficient interest the club may buy
more tickets in June 2017 for visits to the castle
in January or February 2018. If you are interested
email Keith Hughes at keith8411@cox.net
and ask to be placed on a waiting list. Please
note that the tickets in the past have all been
allocated in days or weeks so
procrastinators will miss out just like shopping
in Costco. Tickets will be $15 per person and with
reasonable warning I have been able to reallocate
tickets for people unable to go.
To guarantee the opportunity to buy a ticket email
me by mid June 2017. I save the requests in date
order with highest priority to early dates. The
email is not a commitment to buy but helps me
assess interest to judge how many tickets to buy.
Tours are approximately 2 hours and include the
historic Castle's main floor and basement,
extensive grounds and cactus gardens surrounding
the Castle.
Guests are greeted by Tovrea Carraro Society
volunteers at the Visitor Center and taken through
the Carraro Cactus Gardens on a tram with a
docent. The tour winds through the beautiful 44
acres, viewing the outer buildings, before
arriving at Tovrea Castle.
The club would like to thank Tamera Zivic, Tovrea
Carraro Society President for working with us and
providing special group tours to fit our schedule.

Calling all able bodied
retirees!!! In line with our “giving back”
culture, your Board has embraced an opportunity to work
with Honeywell Aerospace supporting Rebuilding Together,
Valley of the Sun (RTVOS), a charitable organization
based in Tempe. RTVOS and Aerospace are
planning a working event this coming November. It will be a
community housing/shelter event, performing tasks like
maintenance and clean-up for folks who are unable to do
so for themselves. It's a great opportunity to
support those in need in the valley, while spending
quality time with other retirees and active
employees. The specific tasks, as well as
locations and dates, will be chosen by Honeywell and
RTVOS. There will be a variety of work available
to accommodate different skill levels. Tools and
materials will be provided.

Please place a marker in your calendar to help this
noble effort to give back. We’ll be publishing
more details as they develop. Our point of
contact for this event is Doug Metzger. Doug is
starting a list of interested people now who will be
contacted first when we have more details. Your name on
this list is NOT a commitment. We won’t ask for a
commitment until we have more details about the
activity, dates, and locations. Please
contact Doug at 602-319-6637 or doug.metzger@cox.net
to get your name on the list. Also indicate what
area of town you are in, as this may help to determine
the location chosen.
December
