Newsletter
of
the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona
NOTE:
This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the
full version sent to paid-up members, with updates
to event information since the Bridge was
distributed. For example, it does
not contain names of recent retirees, new members,
or members who have passed away, nor does it
contain the list of member email addresses which
is sent out from time to time. Finally, there will typically be a
delay of a week or so before a new month's version
is posted here; if you want to get the Bridge as it
comes off the press, become
a member and request the full-color PDF
version, the eBridge, which is sent by email. Note
that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the
black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically
delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is
delivered by email, so apart from news being a
little old, members receiving only the paper copy
may miss out on first come, first served signup for
upcoming events.

I hope
everyone is enjoying a happy and
warm holiday season with family
and friends.
Last
month, we pleaded for volunteers
to help lead the Club. I’m
pleased to announce
that we have added two new
Directors to the Board, Rick
Carter (currently our Club
Photographer) and Jim Redmond
(currently our Chairman of the
Scholarship Foundation). As you
can see, these two gentlemen
already are contributing in
positive ways to the Club and
decided to help even more by
joining the Board of Directors.
Thanks, Rick and Jim. We value
your time and inputs.
However,
the Club still has serious needs
in important leadership
positions. If these vacancies go
unfilled, we must consider the
consequence of disbanding the
Club permanently. The problem I
foresee is that we could fall
into the same sort of malaise
that the Yavapai Club
experienced 6 years
ago (2011). Without fresh
leadership coming to the fore,
they had to disband. I can’t envision
the Club, without leaders,
growing and continuing to
contribute to our membership and
communities.
Please
search your conscience to see if
you’re willing to help. We
are in need of a new President and in
dire need of someone to help
maintain the membership database, a secretary to
record Board decisions, one
more Director to
help with those decisions, an editor for The
Bridge, and
more. We have asked in the past
without much result. It
surprises me, that with all the
talent and good folks in this
group of some 500, it seems that
someone would volunteer their
talent and help serve your club
membership and keep the Club
viable.
So, how
about it? This Club NEEDS help
to continue our good work.
Unless we find a capable
President, a Secretary,
Membership Chair, and some
Directors, there will be no one
to lead the club
when my term expires on June 1,
2018. Let’s not follow in the
footsteps of the Yavapai club.
Let’s get going. Contact me if
you think you or someone you
know can help.
On a
brighter note, I’m pleased to
note that the
volunteer event sponsored by
Rebuilding Together, Valley of
the Sun (RTVOS) and Honeywell
Aerospace on November 11 was
well attended by active and
retired employees alike. Thank
you, Doug Metzger, for getting
us involved with this event. You
can read his event summary
elsewhere in this newsletter.
I’m
also pleased to announce that
Rick Carter has taken up
leadership for getting us
involved again with the Amazon
Fulfillment Center tours. He’s
working on something for early
next year. Stay
tuned for his announcement(s).
A final
thought: Behind every angry
woman is a man who has
absolutely no idea what he did
wrong.
Happy
holidays!

Honeywell Retiree Clubs
Scholarship Foundation
Scholarship
applications for next year opened this
December 1st. The Scholarship
Program is jointly sponsored by the
Honeywell Retirees’ Social Club and the
Garrett Retirees' Scial Clubs of
Arizona. The source of the funds for
these scholarships is shared among the
participating retiree clubs, Honeywell
International (HON) and our generous
members.
The Bri<br> Our goal is to identify eligible
undergraduate and graduate college students,
who are descendants of a participating
Honeywell Retiree Club of Arizona member, and
award them money to help reduce their costs
for a college education. Our awards generally
range from $1000 to $1200 per recipient per
year, based on the funds that are available.
To date, we have awarded almost $50 thousand
dollars, to 46 students attending Arizona
State, University of Arizona, and Northern
Arizona University.
Who is eligible for the
Honeywell Retiree Clubs
Scholarship?
1
The student must be a
legal descendant of an active or

Garrett Retirees' Social Club of
AZ.
2
The student should have
attained a 3.0 or better Grade
Point Average (GPA).
3
The student must be
entering the second semester
freshman year, a sophomore, a
junior, OR a senior, or in a
graduate course of study.
NOTE:
Enrolled freshman may apply during
the second freshman semester for
their sophomore year, providing
they attain a 3.0 GPA or greater
in their first semester.
Second semester GPA will
also be considered for the award.
4
Students may be enrolled
in any field of study, although
preference may be given to a
student who is enrolled in a
technical field, in the event two
or more applicants qualify for the
same scholarship award.
5
Candidates
must re-apply annually.

On a cold and cloudy
day on Jan 20th, 2017 we had 22
people tour the Castle in the first of four
exclusive club only tours. The group learned
about the history of the castle and the
surrounding area.
Southwest Airlines
Tour – Jan 26, 2017
Fifty club members from Air Research, Garrett, Allied,
Honeywell and Sperry clubs toured Southwest Airlines
Maintenance Facility. The two 737-700 aircraft in the
hanger were undergoing their 500 day overhaul so we
were unable to go aboard but our host, Kevin Bowman
did a fine job explaining the facility operation and
the history of the airline. We learned how the tail of
the 737-700 aircraft is too tall for the hanger so
they lift the nose wheel up to drop the tail to get
the aircraft in the hanger.
This was our third visit and if there is sufficient
interest we will arrange another visit in a few
months.
Tovrea Castle
Tour, February 11, 2017
In pleasant weather conditions,
23 of us were shown around the Castle and its
grounds by enthusiastic volunteers from the Tovrea
Carraro Society. Many thanks to Keith Hughes for
arranging this, and for warning about the Loop 202
freeway closure; as a result of his heads-up,
everyone arrived by 10am! (By the way, tour guides
pronounce it "Toe-vree.")

A balmy day, perfect for a horse race.Hearts were in the air and all of us brought
our special valentine.Forty-four
members and guests attended Honeywell/Sperry’s "Day at
the Races". We had participants from all three retiree
clubs, Honeywell, Garrett, and Sperry. I won all of
the races and most members at my table won as well.
The food was plentiful and good. Desserts were
fabulous and filling. Leaving I felt like I could not
wait until next year for this event.

30 members enjoyed a very
enlightening tour of the Amazon "PHX6"
Fulfillment Center, whose area is equivalent
to 28 football fields… We started with a video
overview of the process from product delivery
at the fulfillment center to shipment, and
then had opportunities to observe the various
stages of the process at close quarters, with
commentary over headsets to overcome the quite
high noise levels. Many thanks to Ed Taschner

all was well at the start of the tour, even

Honeywell Aero Women’s Council April 4 Panel
The Deer
Valley Chapter of Honeywell Aero Women’s Council
(AWC) invited five former Aerospace professional
women to participate in a panel discussion attended
by current Honeywell employees regarding our
experiences during our careers at Honeywell. (Kaye
Eibeck, Linda Darnell, Sandy Thruston, Pam Kalish,
and Jan Greisiger).
Topics discussed were designed to highlight personal
experiences and enlighten current employees
regarding the history of women’s employment in
Aerospace. The employees that attended the
event were very appreciative of our participation
and that we had helped paved the way for them
through our determination and dedication to our
jobs.
AWC and the Women in Honeywell Engineering Network
(WHEN) expressed interest in continuing to include
retirees in their future events and activities.
Dave Elston’s April 5 Talk on his
Book
“A Year in the Grand
Canyon”
Dave
Elston, a third-generation Garrett employee and Grand
Canyon hiker extraordinaire, gave a talk at the
Garrett April 5 meeting
based on his latest book, “A Year in the Grand
Canyon,” published by Vishnu Temple Press. This documents his over 400 days spent
in the Canyon. He provided summary highlights of his
trips by chapter as follows:
First Steps –
found a dead body on very first hike.
Thunder River
– hyperthermia is no fun.
Grandview
Trail and Horseshoe Mesa – know when to bail out.
Day Hike to
prove a point – after surgery, Dave had to find
out if he could still hike.
Rim to Rim –
information on ‘how to’ – South Rim water comes
from the North Rim – water delivery system was the
largest Park Service contract ever.
Powell
Plateau – unique – only access is North Rim –
Anasazi abandoned location ~ 1150.
Favorite East
Rim hikes – Soap Creek, Spencer Trail, South
Canyon.
Clear Creek,
Chevaya Falls & Human Remains – Arizona’s
largest waterfall flows only seasonally – trail
from Phantom Ranch – area used extensively by
Native Americans.

Our
service project went
very well at Desert
Horizon Elementary
School in Maryvale,
with Honeywell

Rebuilding
Together,
Valley of the Sun (RTVOS).Rebuilding Together,
Valley of the Sun (RTVOS). We had a
turnout of 18 folks from HRSC (see
the picture below) in and among
the 90 or so total folks
volunteering. We all got T- shirts
and a nice box lunch, and a chance
to rub shoulders with other
retirees and current Honeywell
employees.
But mostly we got
an opportunity to help out this
Title I school which serves many
low-income students. Most of us
were painting classroom walls, as
the group in this picture. Others
were doing other jobs, like
painting picnic tables and making
improvements to the play area.
We
want to give many thanks to those
who were able to join us for this
worthwhile contribution to the
school and the community.

Identity Theft Seminar
Jan 11,
2018
Did
you know identity theft is the TOP CONSUMER
COMPLAINT reported to the Federal Trade Commission? And, what’s worse,
it has held that number one position for the
last several years.
Identity theft isn’t just
related to credit cards. Actually, identify
thieves also use the identities they’ve stolen
to secure loans,
bank accounts, driver’s licenses, obtain medical
services, gain employment, set-up telephone service and much more.
Therefore, the SRC board
has scheduled a free Identify Theft seminar on
Thursday, January 11, 2018, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in the Quail
Room at the Foothills Library. Seating will be
limited to 60 persons, so we’ll need your RSVP by Tuesday,
January 2, 2018.

Palo Verde Energy Education Center
Tour
Feb TBD,
2018 Buckeye,
AZ
This
tour is mainly for the members unable to
go on the actual Palo Verde Nuclear Power
Station tour but still wanting to learn
about the facility.
The Palo Verde Energy Education Center
(EEC) opened in 2011. The main purpose for
this facility is to serve as an emergency
base of operations in the event of a
crisis at the Palo Verde Nuclear
Generating Station (PVNGS), which is
conveniently located 22 miles away. During
non-emergency
times, the center is used as a technical
and education facility. Information from
the PVNGS is displayed via live data
streams and monitored closely by employees
at the facility. They are able to
communicate instantly with the individuals
at the plant and other officials around
the world if any issue arises at the
nuclear plant. At the center you
will see digital maps of Palo Verde,
Sample fuel rods, reactor models,
emergency procedures, different reactor
designs, power distribution and the use of
treated water.
The center is easy to get to in Buckeye.
No date has been set as I am looking to
see interest. Normal days are Tuesday and
Thursday and the limit is 100 people. If
you are interested in going in February 2018,
email keith8411@cox.net
and ask to be put on the list.

Palo Verde Nuclear Power
Station Tour Feb
14, 2018
(Jan
10 & 31
and Feb 7
are full.)
This is a unique opportunity to get
up close to a nuclear reactor. However, this tour
requires a lot of walking across a very large
4,000-acre campus so you must be physically fit.
Palo Verde is located 45 miles west of Phoenix off
the I10 and is the largest nuclear power plant in
the United States, serving about four million
people.
The Palo Verde Generating Station is located in the
Arizona desert, and is the only large nuclear power
plant in the world that is not located near a large
body of water. The power plant evaporates the water
from the treated sewage from several nearby cities
and towns to provide the cooling of the steam that
it produces.
Each tour is limited to 20 people and starts on site
at 9am. It starts with an overview briefing before a
walking tour. Lunch will be provided followed by a
question and answer session to finish between 1.30pm
and 2.00pm. Considering the remote location we might
want to organize ride share. I will limit the
tickets to 2 per member but can add additional dates
if demand is there. If you are unable to go check
out the Energy Education Center Trip on another
page.
If interested send the following to keith8411@cox.net.
I
will need your Name, number of tickets (1 or 2),

ride share).

Tickets are
$15 per person.
Tours are approximately 2 hours and
include the historic Castle's main floor
and basement, extensive grounds and cactus
gardens surrounding the Castle. Most of
the tour is outside riding a tram so dress
warm.
The tour starts at 10 am and the
grounds are cool. The tour is wheel chair
accessible but no electric scooters are
allowed. There are seats inside the
building to rest so it is not a strenuous
tour.
Guests are greeted by Tovrea Carraro
Society volunteers at the Visitor Center
and taken through the Carraro Cactus
Gardens on a tram with a docent. The tour winds
through the beautiful 44 acres, viewing
the outer buildings, before arriving at
Tovrea Castle.
