Newsletter of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with possible updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

Finally, there will typically be a delay of up to a week before a new month's version is posted here; if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email. Note that the black-and-white paper Bridge is sent out by Honeywell, who outsource the task. It is typically delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email.

President's Perspective

Mary Barkl FaceIt has been a busy startup this fiscal year for the Board members. We have a new set of bylaws which are approved and are now located on the HRSC website. You can view the new bylaws at the following link: HRSC Bylaws. Members who do not have access to the web and are interested in the new HRSC bylaws, can either mail a request to "Honeywell Retiree Social Club, 1860 W. Rose Garden Lane, Phoenix, AZ 85027-2704" or call me at 480-580-5585. A copy of the bylaws will be printed and sent to you in the mail.

The HRSC Website has had some major face-lifting done and we're sure that you will find items of interest to you, link: www.hrcaz.org. We hope that all HRSC members who have a computer or network access will take a look and provide feedback; your comments/questions can be sent to: Hotline@hrcaz.org or Honeywell Retiree Social Club, 1860 W. Rose Garden Lane, Phoenix, AZ 85027-2704. We want to thank Kevin Harris, our new website administrator, for all his hard work in this area.

If you missed the New England cruise this summer, you'll enjoy the pictures below. Everyone who went had a wonderful time. The weather changed some of the plans, but it was still an enjoyable cruise. Thank you Barbara Rippstein for hosting this event!

Oktoberfest was enjoyed by all in attendance, the ice breaker got everyone scratching their heads early. The brats and hamburgers were delicious. A big thanks to our hosts Pat and Darrel Golic who planned the event and added some interesting food changes this year. Thanks also to the board members who supported Pat and Darrel. See pictures of the event below.

Don’t forget we are packing and delivering turkey boxes just before Thanksgiving Day at the Desert Mission Foodbank, please see the article below and give Doug Metzger a call. Although the deadline has passed he may still be able to get you on the list.

If you have not gotten your reservations for the CHRISTMAS Dinner/dance better do it soon, it is also just around the corner.
We are always looking for new Board Members and currently have several positions to fill. We will have a phone drive to recruit for new members starting in December. However, if you are interested no need to wait, call one of the existing board members as positions are open now.

Thank you for being a loyal member of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona HRSC.

Mary

Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM UPDATES

The Scholarship Board has opened this year’s program and we hope it will be easier than ever to apply. Beginning December 1, 2015 there will be several ways to apply for a Scholarship. As in the past, a student attending Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU) or University of Arizona (UofA) may apply for a Honeywell Retiree Clubs of Arizona Scholarship through the school’s scholarship network. Additionally, this year the Scholarship Board will begin accepting applications by mail—sent directly to the Scholarship Board.

Applications and instructions on how to apply will be available on the Scholarship Program page of the HRSC Website, beginning December 1, and will also be published in the December Bridge. The Scholarship Board members will be available to help with any questions you may have. Each of the three schools has a Scholarship Board member that works directly with that school and students, and will be there to help, no matter what application process you use.

To be eligible for consideration for a Scholarship, applicants should:
  • Attend one of the three designated State Universities: Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), or University of Arizona (UofA).
  • Be a descendant of an active or deceased member of a participating club (currently Honeywell or Garrett Retiree Club). A deceased member is defined as a member who passed away while holding active membership in one of the two clubs.
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater.
  • Be a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student during the academic year you are applying for.
Note: Enrolled freshmen may apply during the second freshman semester, for their sophomore year scholarship, providing they attain a 3.0 GPA or greater in their first semester.

Watch the Honeywell Retiree Social Club website Scholarship page in December for information on this year’s Scholarship Program.

Arizona Broadway Theater Heading
(Report pending)

West Side StoryWest Side Story
Thursday, November 12
Experience one of the most memorable musicals of all time when ABT brings the Broadway landmark West Side Story to the stage! Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as it tells the heart-wrenching story of two young lovers caught between prejudice and warring street gangs in the early 1960's.

Originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Jerome Robbins, the Broadway production ran for an impressive 732 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Choreography. The dark sophistication of this critically acclaimed Bernstein and Sondheim score leaves you mesmerized with popular songs like "Maria," "America" and "I Feel Pretty".

Note: The deadline for HRSC group tickets has passed, but there might be cancelations. If you miss out, don't forget the next HRSC visit to the Arizona Broadway Theater—Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on May 12, 2016.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program in Arizona

Training Provided in early January

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program in Arizona will provide free tax preparation services for seniors and low income families this again this season, completing 2015 returns. The foundation has 31 sites in the Phoenix area usually located in Senior Centers, Community Centers, Libraries, or Community Colleges. All sites are staffed with trained, certified volunteers.

Last year, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers in Arizona filed over 70,000 returns saving those taxpayers an estimated $12.9 million in preparation fees.

The AARP program in partnership with the IRS is currently recruiting volunteers for sites throughout the state. Volunteers do not need previous tax preparation experience as all necessary training is provided. Only two qualifications are needed, a real interest in helping people, and a basic familiarity with Microsoft Windows.

Every year we need new volunteers to continue this valuable service. You can help by volunteering one day each week from February 1st through April 15th at a Phoenix Community/Senior Center near your home. Training is held in early January. Best of all, you are never left alone. Each location has plenty of experienced tax preparation volunteers who are always willing and able to help you with specific taxpayer problems.

So if you have the time and energy to give back to the community by providing a valuable service to many people please join us.

Here's how to sign up:

•    On-line at aarp.org/money/taxes/info-2006/volunteer_aarp_tax_aide.html   or
•    Send an email to Frank Lynott at flynott@gmail.com

Meet great people, learn a new skill, and help your community.

Honeywell Aerospace Challenge

Feb. 8-10, 2016

Sign up by early Jan. 2016

Aerospace Challenge

The Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge is one of Arizona’s premier academic contests for youth. Entering its 17th year, this stimulating contest allows fifth through eighth grade students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of space technology. The Aerospace Challenge requires participants to develop plans for an International Lunar Base complete with a physical scale model. More than 1200 students will participate in this contest in which they work in groups to achieve critical problem-solving, communication, team-building and decision-making skills. As a result, they will expand their knowledge in subject areas such as math, science, social studies, language and fine arts.

The preliminary round of competition takes place Feb 8-10, 2016, with the top two teams each day advancing to the finals. Finalists will enjoy an exclusive opportunity to attend a presentation from NASA astronauts. The Aerospace Challenge winning team will earn an all expense paid trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, and a special on-field appearance at the 46th Annual Fiesta Bowl in January 2017.

All the judging for the competition is performed by Honeywell employees and retirees. Please volunteer for one, two or three days. Signup deadline is early Jan 2016. Breakfast and lunch is provided. This is an opportunity for retirees to participate as well. Last year five retirees volunteered and we would like more this year. For more details contact Keith Hughes at keith8411@cox.net.

Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Thursday, May 12

It’s the late 1970s and the happy-go-lucky town of Gilbert, Texas has just been put on the map when a crusading television reporter aims his camera at a favorite, local “destination” - The Chicken Ranch.

Frequented by governors, senators, mayors and even victorious college football teams for more than a century, the town is now faced with recounting the good times as they struggle with the demise of their best pleasure palace. Made famous by Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton, The Best Little Whore-house In Texas is a charming, lively and genial show that will leave you laughing for days with songs like “Girl, You’re A Woman” “Twenty Four Hours of Lovin” and “No Lies.”
