Newsletter of the

The Bridge

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted (e.g., buttons at left removed to improve readability, and all event information together following other items) sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

There will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted here—if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email and can be received wherever you may be, unlike the paper version. Note that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically delivered one to two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

Past issues of the online Bridge are available on the ARCHIVES page.

Display of Email Addresses

Per the website policy defined in the HRSC Bylaws, the "mailto:" feature of email address links, that generates a draft email when clicked, is not used with personal email addresses—only with general addresses such as Hotline@hrcaz.org or Bridge_Editor@hrcaz.org. This restriction only applies to the website, and thus this online Bridgeit does not apply to the PDF eBridge, since that is not publicly available and cannot be crawled by email address harvesters.

The Bridge
The Bridge
The Bridge Hi everyone! I hope that you are all doing well and have received all of your COVID vaccines. It is certainly more freeing when you have them over with, and it is much easier to venture out without the fear of potential illness or death.

It is April, the month that the HRSC recruits more Board members. This year we have met using Zoom. It has been very convenient, easy to attend, and help with planning. The Board has not voted on continuing to use Zoom but, the way the Board members are spread out and how easy it has been to participate, I am sure we will continue meeting virtually. With that said, anyone located anywhere could participate easily when becoming a Board member. Please think about joining us on the Board this year. We need new ideas and you could help.

As this year progresses, we are looking forward to having more adventures everyone can participate in and we would no longer need to use virtual tour. I have found the virtual tours to be very interesting, enjoyable, and enlightening thanks to our editor Kay.

The Scholarship Foundation Board will also need a new Chairperson and Treasurer at the beginning of September. Ideally, the transition should begin in late August. Cheryl Wiley, the current Chair, has agreed to stay through August/early September in order to facilitate a smooth transition to the new Chair, as has Mary Harris, the current Treasurer. The Scholarship Board has done a great job of communicating with us about their activities and introducing us to scholarship recipients. On the following page, you will find a listing of the duties of each position. This Board has also done a good job of automating as many processes as they can in order to make sure they are working smarter, not harder! I believe you will find each of these opportunities very rewarding. Thanks for considering volunteering for this worthwhile activity!

If any of you have burning questions or comments, feel free to call or write me.

E-Mail Addresses

A list of those members who agreed to release their E-mail addresses to the HRSC Bridge newsletter has been included at the end of the April Bridge this month. This list will enable members to keep in touch and/or search for members they haven’t talked to or seen for a while. Do you have a new address or E-mail? Please be sure to send us the updated information to: Hotline@hrcaz.org or to the Honeywell Retiree Social Club, 1860 W. Rose Garden Lane, Phoenix, AZ 85027-2704.

PAPER OR ELECTRONIC?

Once again we would like to take this opportunity to encourage our members to switch from a paper Bridge to the electronic version of the Bridge. And if you are currently receiving both, there are many advantages to switching to an electronic copy only. Our goal is to keep you informed as much as possible during these trying times and to let you know that we are still here for you. The electronic Bridge will definitely make that happen! Often there is a lag in delivery of the paper Bridge that could cause members to miss current information and/or articles. In order to receive the latest information, we highly recommend that you start receiving an electronic copy of the Bridge each month. They will be sent directly to your E-mail address within one or two days of completion. An electronic copy of the Bridge can also be found on line at www.hrcaz.org. The on line Bridge, however, is not a copy of the full Bridge, only a subset. Just click on the “Online Bridge” menu button for access. We strongly encourage everyone to start using the electronic Bridge which will save time in the long run and provide the most current information within a matter of days instead of weeks.

HONEYWELL RETIREE SOCIAL CLUB ADDRESS

The B When mailing items to the HRSC treasurer, please ensure that you address the envelope using the full name of the club, i.e. Honeywell Retiree Social Club, so it goes to the proper location. Some people just put HRSC on the envelope and it ends up in HR which slows down the process.

Honeywell Clubs Fix-It Guys Program

Sponsored by the Honeywell Retiree Social Club, Honeywell-Garrett and Aero Activities Retiree Clubs

Gary Kains is the coordinator for the Fix-It-Guys program. Our purpose is to help club members and/or surviving spouses who may need assistance with handyman-type repairs and will appreciate saving some money. Currently there are seven Fix-It- Guys and Gary Kains, the coordinator. If you have such a need, call Gary at (480) 835-6060 to schedule a trip to your home. If you reach voice mail, please leave a message giving your name, phone number, description of the job, and nearest cross streets. We will get back with you to schedule a visit. We provide the labor at no cost to you, and you furnish the cost of the materials.

You don't have to be a contractor-level kind of handyman—just generally handy around the house. Some of you may have special skills (Computer/Plumbing/Electrical/Drywall?) that can significantly help our members in need, and you will be reimbursed for your travel. Why not try it? Please call Gary Kains, (480-835-6060) if interested. We would love to talk with you!

The table below lists our current Fix-It Guys Team.

“The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.”
                                                                                                                                            Harriet Ann Jacobs

The Scholarship Board hopes everyone is continuing to stay safe, healthy and socially distanced. We also hope those who are eligible and who want to have been able to get their vaccine. Hopefully, our souls will be revived soon when we can all be safely together again.
Our application submission cycle closed on April 1. We had eight applications this year, down from fourteen last year.

Your Scholarship Board will be busy in April reviewing the applications we received for the 2021-2022 academic year and determining dollar awards.

We are always extremely grateful for our members’ generosity with their donations, especially this past year during the pandemic, and especially Honeywell Aerospace for their generous $8,000 contribution! We are confident our deserving students will be thankful as well for your assistance with their college expenses.

If your descendant missed the April 1st deadline for application submission this academic year, be sure you get our information to them in a timely manner next year. Here are the criteria:

The Bridg
  • •
Member must be 50+ years of age, a member of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club or Honeywell-Garrett Retiree Club with dues current.

    •  Student must be your descendant (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and/or great-great grandchildren)

    •  Student must be currently enrolled at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University or the University of Arizona as either an undergraduate or graduate student?

    •  Student must have a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better.

The B
If you can answer YES to all of the previous questions, then your college student is eligible for a scholarship from the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation. This means FREE MONEY $$$ for your student to aid them with their college expenses, help them achieve their goals in life and become productive members of the community and society. These funds are available to our students through the generous contributions of our retiree club members and Honeywell. The scholarships usually range in value from $500-$1,500 per academic year, depending on total donations.

WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE?
  • The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advisor).
  • We live in a global economy.  The ability of the United States to maintain its leadership role in the world, and the resulting benefits which accrue to us as citizens, demand an educated workforce as well as educated citizens and voters.
  • Supporting education by donating to scholarships is in your own interest!  When you donate money to our scholarship fund, think of it as paying it forward by investing in a student’s future.
  • By helping someone afford a college education, you are raising their salary potential and hence the tax base. This is a good thing for everyone - better roads, better schools, better teachers, more doctors just to name a few.
  • Successful, well run communities attract more investment. Not to mention more folks with jobs paying into Social Security and Medicare which is something all retirees are interested in preserving.
  • Giving makes you feel good, strengthens personal values and shows your children and grandchildren what you care about.
  • Best of all, giving to the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation means every cent is used for scholarships.

Please review your charitable contributions and consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes.

If you would like to donate at any time throughout the year, please make your check payable to:  Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation.

You can mail your check, together with the form below to either of:

Virtual Tour Title

As Mary mentioned in the President’s Perspective, the HRSC Board is exploring new avenues for things to do to replace the events that have been canceled for 2020. One of the options we discussed and researched are virtual tours. We discovered that there were many to choose from on the internet that we thought would be both interesting and enjoyable for our members.

Although there are many options to choose from, we reviewed them online and chose the ones on YouTube that we thought would be the most interesting.

The Bridge

Here is a list of the virtual performances and videos that we are offering this month:

·      Repairing the Lightning Rods on the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro – Amazing and mind boggling!

·      • The Singing Anesthesiologists – Funny and very well done!

·      • Quarantine – For The Longest Time – Different take on a popular Billy Joel song performed by the Phoenix Chamber Choir from Vancouver, BC.

Many of you have already taken advantage of the tours we have offered in the past and we hope that this virtual tour will bring back some pleasant memories. We will continue to explore other virtual tours that sound interesting and entertaining for the May Bridge newsletter, then we will wind down for the summer months.

Hopefully in the fall we will be able to start planning group events again and once again enjoy each other’s company!

The song “The Longest Time” by Billy Joel gets a quarantine makeover. In this creative video, the Phoenix Chamber Choir from Vancouver, BC provides an entertaining virtual performance giving the song some new quarantine lyrics.

                                                          2

Several members have requested this tour again so here goes. This is a unique opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines Maintenance Facility at Sky Harbor Airport. You may be able to walk through an aircraft and sit in the cockpit then tour the maintenance and operation areas in a two hour guided tour. You will find out why the first aircraft were painted those colors, how the fit an aircraft that is too big into the hanger and maybe debate the correct part numbers of the APS we see in the stores. Last year we sat in an aircraft only 5 flight hours old and not yet entered service. Yes it had the new aircraft smell. This free tour is planned for Wednesday, April 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. but names of all attendees are required in advance for security purposes. This will be our fourth tour and spaces fill quickly. I have to limit the group to 40 for practical reasons.

To register send the full names of all in your party to Keith Hughes at keith8411@cox.net or call 623-825-5243 for details.

Panama Canal Cruise
NOV 10 2020

HRSC - Barbara Rippstein

Update from Barbara Rippstein

Princess have now canceled this cruise. All those affected have already been informed.

(Notes written prior to cancellation.)

Traveling for pleasure has become something that we can only remember or look forward to enjoying again. We have been advised to stay home. Non-essential travel is discouraged, restaurants are only serving take out.

Most cruise lines were faced with port closures, decreased flights and increased travel restrictions that change on a country-by-country basis. Adding to voluntary suspensions, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a no-sail order on April 9th for all cruise ships over 250 passengers and crew that operate in U.S. waters. The order is expected to remain in place until COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency. Should 100 days from the official date of issue expire (bringing us to late July), and the COVID-19 pandemic still be an emergency, the CDC would have the option to extend the order.

I have been keeping tabs on when each line expects to resume sailings, keeping in mind that for relevant cruise lines sailing in U.S. waters, the CDC order supersedes individual cruise line dates for a return to service.

Princess is expecting to resume sailing all ships in July in the U.S. and Europe. Which means that on November 10th our 15 night cruise through the Panama Canal will be sailing from San Pedro, CA and returning via Fort Lauderdale, FL. If you have never seen the canal, this will be an extraordinary treat. We are going through the new locks. They’re bigger and better.

In addition, we all need something to look forward to and I have found the perfect trip. Starting August 27, 2021, a 9-night sun-drenched escape aboard Celebrity EquinoxSM will provide an experience with the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Visit world-class restaurants, designer boutiques, and elegant beaches in the Cayman Islands. Board a catamaran for a peaceful day of sailing and snorkeling at Aruba’s Palm Beach. And admire the colorful architecture of Willemstad while basking in the sunshine with a glass of traditional blue Curacoa. The Celebrity Equinox is a beautiful ship with great food. It’s a cruise you will enjoy. Join us. I will be offering more information in the fall but you can reserve your cabin now.

I RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE PLANNING A CRUISE BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE

To get more information on prices and reservations, please call Susan Ray at Fords World Travel air 623-933-8256.

When you call to make reservations, please tell the agent that you are part of Barbara Rippstein’s group.

“We will be taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of our Guests and Staff. Everyone is required to wear a mask, will practice social distancing, with tour sizes broken into smaller groupings.” Most of the tour is outside riding on Golf Carts. This maybe relaxed by the tour date.

This is a private tour for Aero, Honeywell, and Garrett clubs. Tours are approximately 2 hours and include the historic Castle's main floor and basement, and extensive grounds and cactus gardens surrounding the Castle. Most of the tour is outside riding a tram so dress warm. The tour starts at 10.00 am and the grounds are cool. The tour is wheel chair accessible but no electric scooters are allowed. There are seats inside the building to rest so it is not a strenuous tour.

Guests are greeted by Tovrea Carraro Society volunteers at the Visitor Center and taken through the Carraro Cactus Gardens on a tram with a docent. The tour winds through the beautiful 44 acres, viewing the outer buildings, before arriving at Tovrea Castle.

The Society has increased the price to $25 but the club is receiving a special price of $22 each.

This will be our last tour for 12 months so please do not delay in booking the tickets. We have had over 400 members visit on 17 different dates and the event is still popular. Only a limited number of tickets are available so book early to avoid disappointment.

If interested, send the following to keith8411@cox.net. Please provide your name, number of tickets, club affiliation, and cell phone number in case of last minute changes.

AIRLINES, HOTELS, CRUISES TRAVEL IS RETURNING

By Barbara Rippstein

Cruise
                                                          Ship

For the past 14 months most of us have been home-bound or at least staying close to home.  Airlines and hotels have not had their normal number of visitors and have curtailed their flights.  Hotels have had greatly decreased room rentals.  Cruise lines stopped sailing worldwide.  All had to decrease their staff but now things are starting to change.

Air travel has started increasing already.  The TSA reports that on April 1 2021, 1,562,239 passed through their inspection, and the number keeps growing every week.  Air travel has hit its highest number of passengers in a year, but not as much as last year. What are the CDC's recommendations for U.S. air travel and hotels during COVID-19 pandemic? Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public settings. Masks are required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, as well as in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.

Hotels are starting to advertise with discount prices and open dates.  I suggest using a computer data base to find hotels in your price range.  Then go to that hotels web site to get the best price.  Most offer free cancelation, airport shuttle and some offer breakfast.

Cruise lines originating or stopping in the U.S. have not started sailing.  They are waiting for the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to revise its Conditional Sail Order.  Cruises in Europe and Asia have already started sailing.  Because of the pent-up demand, many cruises for this fall and the next two years are already being booked.  Although the cruise lines offer sales, frequent cruisers have noted that prices are going up.  That’s one reason that I always book early.

Most cruise lines also have COVID requirements and have added HEPA filters for cleaner air transfer.  All passengers and crew must have already had their COVID vaccine shots and bring proof.  All common areas and individual passenger cabins will be sanitized before passengers’ board.  Passengers are encouraged to wear a mask except during dining and drinking.  Although most lines will continue to have buffets, they will be served by the cruise crew.

I have already arranged for a 5-day cruise for the Honeywell, Aero, and Garrett Retirees Clubs.  It will depart on April 24, 2022 from Los Angeles (LA), returning on April 29th.  It will stop at Cabo San Lucas for 25 hours. A shorter cruise sounded right until we get more input into how cruising has changed.  I will continue to read reviews from early passengers about their trips.  Using LA as our port gives our group the option to fly to LA at a reasonable fare or drive over.  This cruise offers a beverage package, free Wi-Fi, prepaid onboard gratuities and dining.  I will provide an ad for this cruise in May’s issue of The Bridge with all of the details.
