Bridge photo for header

Newsletter of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

Finally, there will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted here; if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email. Note that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

President's Perspective

Ed Taschner

I again want to thank all of you for your support of the club in 2017.   Mary and I were unable to attend the Christmas Dinner-Dance with Sperry, but I trust the event went well and there will be another this year.

I still need to discuss the serious need for some members to step up and take leadership positions in the club.   The club has an immediate need for an Editor for the Bridge, a Membership Chair, and a President for the next club season (2018/2019).

In May of this year, I will be completing my second term as President and we will need a President.   I and the board have been requesting people to step up and so far no one has.  As a result, your Board will be discussing the future of the club at our January meeting.

Without leaders, our club cannot function and will have to disband! Not only will we lose seeing many of our friends at club activities, but the Scholarship fund will lose a major source of income.  I know you don’t want to see the club disband, but without leadership that is what is going to happen!

On a brighter note, I pray you all had a good holiday season with family and friends and I look forward to keeping things going in 2018.

Happy New Year!

Tovrea Castle Tour, January 20, 2017

On a cold and cloudy day on Jan 20th, 2017 we had 22 people tour the Castle in the first of four exclusive club only tours. The group learned about the history of the castle and the surrounding area.

                      Airlines Plane

SW Plane

Fifty club members from Air Research, Garrett, Allied, Honeywell and Sperry clubs toured Southwest Airlines Maintenance Facility. The two 737-700 aircraft in the hanger were undergoing their 500 day overhaul so we were unable to go aboard but our host, Kevin Bowman did a fine job explaining the facility operation and the history of the airline. We learned how the tail of the 737-700 aircraft is too tall for the hanger so they lift the nose wheel up to drop the tail to get the aircraft in the hanger.

This was our third visit and if there is sufficient interest we will arrange another visit in a few months.

"A DAY AT THE RACES"

Tuesday Feb 14, 2017

A balmy day, perfect for a horse race.  Hearts were in the air and all of us brought our special valentine.  Forty-four members and guests attended Honeywell/Sperry’s "Day at the Races". We had participants from all three retiree clubs, Honeywell, Garrett, and Sperry. I won all of the races and most members at my table won as well. The food was plentiful and good. Desserts were fabulous and filling. Leaving I felt like I could not wait until next year for this event.

See you next year!

March 10, 2017

30 members enjoyed a very enlightening tour of the Amazon "PHX6" Fulfillment Center, whose area is equivalent to 28 football fields… We started with a video overview of the process from product delivery at the fulfillment center to shipment, and then had opportunities to observe the various stages of the process at close quarters, with commentary over headsets to overcome the quite high noise levels. Many thanks to Ed Taschner for organizing this; he came down to make sure all was well at the start of the tour, even though he was not on it.

HRSC Members on
Honeywell Aero Women’s Council April 4 Panel

The Deer Valley Chapter of Honeywell Aero Women’s Council (AWC) invited five former Aerospace professional women to participate in a panel discussion attended by current Honeywell employees regarding our experiences during our careers at Honeywell. (Kaye Eibeck, Linda Darnell, Sandy Thruston, Pam Kalish, and Jan Greisiger).

Topics discussed were designed to highlight personal experiences and enlighten current employees regarding the history of women’s employment in Aerospace.  The employees that attended the event were very appreciative of our participation and that we had helped paved the way for them through our determination and dedication to our jobs.

AWC and the Women in Honeywell Engineering Network (WHEN) expressed interest in continuing to include retirees in their future events and activities.

Dave Elston’s April 5 Talk on his Book
“A Year in the Grand Canyon”

Year in GCDave Elston, a third-generation Garrett employee and Grand Canyon hiker extraordinaire, gave a talk at the Garrett April 5 meeting based on his latest book, “A Year in the Grand Canyon,” published by Vishnu Temple Press. This documents his over 400 days spent in the Canyon. He provided summary highlights of his trips by chapter as follows:
  1. First Steps – found a dead body on very first hike.
  2. Thunder River – hyperthermia is no fun.
  3. Grandview Trail and Horseshoe Mesa – know when to bail out.
  4. Day Hike to prove a point – after surgery, Dave had to find out if he could still hike.
  5. Rim to Rim – information on ‘how to’ – South Rim water comes from the North Rim – water delivery system was the largest Park Service contract ever.
  6. Powell Plateau – unique – only access is North Rim – Anasazi abandoned location ~ 1150.
  7. Favorite East Rim hikes – Soap Creek, Spencer Trail, South Canyon.
  8. Clear Creek, Chevaya Falls & Human Remains – Arizona’s largest waterfall flows only seasonally – trail from Phantom Ranch – area used extensively by Native Americans.
  9. Fun on the river – commercial or private trips.
  10. Helpful tips and lessons learned – footwear, socks, pants, shirts, hats.
  11. What I have learned – Shoshone Point is the best viewpoint on the South Rim.
  12. Closing thoughts – Dave noted that about 19 people die each year at the Grand Canyon.

Anyone planning canyon hiking should refer to Dave’s book!

The Facebook page for the book is at facebook.com/ayearinthegrandcanyon.

Giving Back, with Honeywell and RTVOS
to Improve a Low-Income School.

Nov 11, 2017

RTVOS-1Our service project went very well at Desert Horizon Elementary School in Maryvale, with Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS).  Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS). We had a turnout of 18 folks from HRSC (see the picture below) in and among the 90 or so total folks volunteering. We all got T- shirts and a nice box lunch, and a chance to rub shoulders with other retirees and current Honeywell employees.

But mostly we got an opportunity to help out this Title I school which serves many low-income students. Most of us were painting classroom walls, as the group in this picture. Others were doing other jobs, like painting picnic tables and making improvements to the play area.

RTVOS-2We want to give many thanks to those who were able to join us for this worthwhile contribution to the school and the community.

Many thanks to Doug Metzger for arranging this service project opportunity.

Palo Verde Nuclear Power

The Palo Verde Generating Station is located in the Arizona desert, and is the only large nuclear power plant in the world that is not located near a large body of water. Identity Theft Seminar

Jan 11, 2018

ID Theft 1We had 17 members and guests attend our identity theft seminar on January 11th. Cassie & Paul Prinke presented some very interesting facts regarding ways our identity can be stolen, how it affects us and how to protect ourselves.  Did you know that $15.1B was stolen from 13.1 million Americans in 2015, and that from 2014-2015 identity theft complaints increased 47%?  There were surprising facts on different types of government ID theft which comes from tax/wage related fraud, government benefits, drivers’ licenses, etc.  Also, personal information, such as S/S numbers, phone numbers, date of birth, passport information, etc., is available for thieves to buy, sell and trade through the dark web.

One good way to help prevent ID theft is to check your bank statements daily for any strange transactions and to use free credit checks available from Equifax, Experian and Transunion.

Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station Tour
Jan 31, 2018 Full
Feb 7 & 14, 2018  CANCELED by Palo Verde—budget constraints.
Attempting to schedule replacement tours, possibly in early 2019, for those signed up for the February tours.

Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station OverviewThis is a unique opportunity to get up close to a nuclear reactor. This tour requires a lot of walking across a very large, 4,000-acre campus, so you must be physically fit. Palo Verde is located 45 miles west of Phoenix off the I10 and is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States, serving about four million people.

The Palo Verde Generating Station is located in the Arizona desert, and is the only large nuclear power plant in the world that is not located near a large body of water. The power plant evaporates the water from the treated sewage from several nearby cities and towns to provide the cooling of the steam that it produces.

Each tour is limited to 20 people and starts on site at 9am. It starts with an overview briefing before a walking tour. Lunch will be provided followed by a question and answer session to finish between 1.30pm and 2.00pm. Considering the remote location we might want to organize ride share. I am limiting tickets to 2 per member. If you are unable to go, check out the Energy Education Center Trip, which provides quite detailed information about the power station.

Tovrea Castle Tours

Jan 12 & Feb 2, 2018

These dates are full.

Tovrea Castle

Tickets are $15 per person.

Tours are approximately 2 hours and include the historic Castle's main floor and basement, extensive grounds and cactus gardens surrounding the Castle. Most of the tour is outside riding a tram so dress warm.

The tour starts at 10 am and the grounds are cool. The tour is wheel chair accessible but no electric scooters are allowed. There are seats inside the building to rest so it is not a strenuous tour.

Guests are greeted by Tovrea Carraro Society volunteers at the Visitor Center and taken through the Carraro Cactus Gardens on a tram with a docent. The tour winds through the beautiful 44 acres, viewing the outer buildings, before arriving at Tovrea Castle.

The club would like to thank Tamera Zivic, Tovrea Carraro Society President for working with me (Keith Hughes) and allowing special group tours to fit our schedule.

Have you ever wanted to see an Indy 500 race car up close and personal? Your Sperry Retiree Club is sponsoring a free tour through the Penske Racing Museum in Scottsdale. The Penske Racing Museum showcases an amazing collection of cars, trophies and racing memorabilia chronicling the career of one of the most successful dynasties in all of sports. Team Penske has over 50 years of racing experience and over 400 major race wins highlighted by a record setting number of Indianapolis 500-mile race victories.

Come join your steering committee for an interesting, non-guided tour through Roger Penske’s collection of various cars and memorabilia. If you wish to have lunch after the tour, there are several restaurants just north of the museum you can select from. The SRC is not organizing a set luncheon for this event.

Therefore, if you want to tour the museum, please contact Kaye Eibeck at (480) 948-9910 or email at kwithane@cox.net before Monday, March 5, 2018. She will also discuss your desire to have lunch on site or elsewhere.

Palo Verde Energy Education Center Tour

  Mar - May TBD, 2018
Buckeye, AZ

This tour is mainly for members unable to go on the actual Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station tour,
but still wanting to learn about the facility.

Palo Verde Education Center OutsideThe Palo Verde Energy Education Center (EEC) opened in 2011. The main purpose for this facility is to serve as an emergency base of operations in the event of a crisis at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS), which is conveniently located 22 miles away. During non-ePalo Verde Education Center Insidemergency times, the center is used as a technical and education facility.

Information from the PVNGS is displayed via live data streams and monitored closely by employees at the facility. They are able to communicate instantly with the individuals at the plant and other officials around the world if any issue arises at the nuclear plant.

At the center you will see digital maps of Palo Verde, sample fuel rods, reactor models, emergency procedures, different reactor designs, power distribution and the use of treated water.

The center is easy to get to in Buckeye. No date has been set as I am looking to see interest. Normal days are Tuesday and Thursday and the limit is 100 people. If you are interested in going in Mar - May 2018, email keith8411@cox.net and ask to be put on the list.
