Bridge photo for header HOMEPAGE

Newsletter of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with possible updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

Finally, there will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted here; if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email. Note that the black-and-white paper Bridge is sent out by Honeywell, who outsource the task. It is typically delivered about two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

President's Perspective

Ed Taschner
FaceTo Members, Friends, and Family -

Christmas for us is that magic blanket that wraps itself about us.  That something is so intangible that it is like a pine fragrance, distinct and ever present.  It weaves a spell of nostalgia.  It’s a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance.  This is a season in which we think of everything and of everyone we have ever loved.  Just want to say the Christmas season offers tenderness for the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future.  From your Board of Directors, it is our fervent wish that each and every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal and that every path may lead to peace.

Ed Taschner

Happy Holidays

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM UPDATES

Scholarships for CollegeApplications for the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship opened December 1. You can find the application and other important information on our website at www.hrcaz.org (click on the Scholarship tab, found on the left side of the page). It's easy to apply, and our Foundation Board Members are happy to help.

Please don't forget...if you have a child or grandchild enrolled in Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, or University of Arizona, they may be eligible to apply. The requirements are simple and once you have downloaded and completed an application, just send it to our Treasurer, Gwen Scheetz at scheetzgwen@cox.net. The application process closes April 1, but we look at all applications as soon as we receive them, and work with individuals to ensure their application is complete.

Our Scholarship Foundation Board would like to sincerely thank each of our members and sponsors for helping make these scholarships possible. We would also like to remind everyone that would like to help support our  Scholarship Foundation in the future--your contribution is  tax deductible. The HRSC Membership Application now has an option for a direct donation to the Scholarship Fund—even if you are already a member, you can still use the new application form to make a donation.

If you have questions about the Scholarships, or suggestions for how to improve our process, please contact one of the Board Members.

For more details of the program, see the SCHOLARSHIPS section of the website.

Scholarships

Congratulations to Danielle Martinez
Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship recipient  and
Arizona State University Graduate!

Danielle Martinez
As many of you may remember, Danielle is a psychology major, focusing on family and children.  She said that she will continue her education, working on a Master's degree--after taking some well deserved time off, to relax a little and help out in the family business.

Danielle asked us to please express her sincere thanks for this award.  "Thank you for this awesome opportunity!  Each year it costs more and more to go to school, and this scholarship really helps. Thank you for helping make graduation a reality".

The Scholarship Foundation Team wants to congratulate Danielle on her graduation, excellent grades and hard work--well done!  We would also like to add our sincere thanks to all of our members who have contributed so generously to the Scholarship fund, and our outstanding sponsors, Honeywell Inc., Garrett Retiree Club, and Honeywell Retiree Social Club.  These scholarships wouldn't be possible without you.

This hilarious musical parody staged to classic tunes from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s will have you cheering and dancing in the aisles. See what millions of women worldwide have been laughing about for 14 years!

Set in a department store, four women with seemingly nothing in common but a black lace bra on sale come to find they have more to share than ever imagined. The cast makes fun of their woeful hot flashes, forgetfulness, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats and chocolate binges. A sisterhood is created between these diverse women as they realize that menopause is no longer The Silent Passage, but a stage in every woman’s life that is perfectly normal!

The Sanderson Village and Museum

March 2, 2017

You are invited to tour a private, invitation-only, museum. The Sanderson Village and Museum contains dozens of cars and nostalgic items, such as: a beautifully recreated old mercantile store, a kitchen from the '40s, and a '50s diner with oodles of chrome and period furnishings and accessories such as Coca Cola items from the '30s through the '50s. The 20,000 square-foot warehouse has one of the best Ford collections anywhere and has something for everyone to enjoy.

This free tour starts at 9:30 am on 3/2/17 in Glendale near Grand Ave and 51st Ave. The tour lasts 60 – 75 minutes. Afterwards you may visit the Starliner Diner on the same site and purchase a late breakfast or lunch. For reservations contact Keith Hughes at keith8411@cox.net. Please tell me if you are staying for a meal as space is limited to 30 people. No limit if not eating.

Free Tour of the ORPHEUM THEATRE
March 6 & 7, 2017 at 10am

This one hour tour is exclusive to our clubs, it takes you behind the scenes. Bring your camera and be ready to be “wowed.”

The Orpheum Theatre is a 1364-seat theatre in downtown Phoenix. This venue was originally used for vaudeville acts as part of the nationwide Orpheum Circuit. After falling into disrepair for some years, the Orpheum Theatre was purchased in 1984 by the city of Phoenix, which then began a 12-year, $14 million restoration. The Orpheum reopened on January 28, 1997, with a performance of Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing. After the performance, Ms. Channing, still in costume but out of character, thanked the audience for "not turning this beautiful theatre into a parking lot!"

Each tour is limited to 40 people. Contact Keith Hughes at keith8411@cox.net for reservations. Give your date preference and the newsletter you saw this article in.
